$3 Yard Sale Bowl Sold for $2.2 Million

In the summer of 2007, a New York couple bought a $3 white bowl at a yard sale. Last week, this $3 bowl was valued as over a thousand year old treasure, and sold for $2.22 million at Sotheby’s.

This remarkable Chinese bowl is 5 inches in diameter. It was made during the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127). The bowl quietly sat in the owner’s living room till just recently when the owner became curious about its origin and value. The estimate of this bowl at Sotheby’s pre-sale is between $200-300K.

The only one that is known to be alike has been in the British Museum for more than 60 years.
